The phrase might be “agent workflow”, “AI automation”, or “build better agents”. The problem is not that translation is always wrong. The problem is that the translated phrase has not yet been tested as a Chinese search question.

The useful first test is not “which keyword looks most popular?” It is a record that connects four things: the exact query, the surface where it was tested, the intent it appears to carry, and the next question that remains open. A course search page, a question-oriented content surface, and an e-commerce learning centre are not interchangeable evidence.

The decision is a naming decision, not a traffic forecast

Overseas creator teams often use keyword tools as a proxy for demand. That habit can become dangerous when a Chinese phrase is moved between platforms without recording what changed. A term can describe a course category in one place, a workplace problem in another, and a product-operations topic somewhere else. None of those observations, by itself, proves that people want to buy the course.

China-specific first-party materials make the distinction visible. Douyin’s official e-commerce learning centre is a first-party learning surface. When a team tests commerce vocabulary there, it should capture the exact current module, terms and date observed rather than infer them from a homepage. Bilibili课堂 has an independent course search, category and sorting interface. Zhihu’s official commercial-content material describes tools for finding questions by keyword or field. These pages support a narrow conclusion: Chinese discovery surfaces organise information differently and should be tested in their native context.

They do not prove that an overseas expert can open a shop, list a course, obtain exposure, or generate conversions. They do not prove that a query is popular or that a buyer has a budget. The distinction belongs in the research record, not in a footnote added after a confident conclusion.

Use the same phrase as three different hypotheses

Start with one English capability and two or three Chinese candidates. Do not begin with twenty variations. For example, a workshop about building reliable AI agents might produce candidates that describe an agent workflow, an automation workflow, or a more concrete work result. The exact Chinese wording is less important at this stage than preserving each candidate and its source.

Now place each candidate into three separate observation lanes.

Lane one: course discovery

On a course-search surface such as Bilibili课堂, note whether the phrase appears to belong beside a course category, a skill label, a tool name, or a professional outcome. Record nearby words only as observations. A cluster of course titles may tell you how products are described; it does not tell you that your course will be accepted, ranked, or purchased.

The useful question is: “If a learner searched this phrase, what would they expect to see next?” If the answer is a syllabus, the title may need a clearer learning output. If the phrase is mostly a tool name, the course may be understood as software training rather than a transferable method. That is a naming and positioning signal, not a market-size estimate.

Lane two: question language

Zhihu’s question-oriented environment changes the unit of observation. A candidate may be more useful when written as a problem: how to automate a repetitive workflow, how to evaluate an agent, or how to keep a process reliable. The point is not to copy a visible question into a sales page. It is to see whether the English capability has a natural Chinese problem statement and what assumptions the statement contains.

Ask: “What situation is implied by this wording?” A technical term may be understood by developers but sound abstract to an operations manager. A phrase that looks broad in English may be narrowed by the Chinese verbs around it. Preserve the wording and your interpretation separately.

Lane three: commerce vocabulary

Douyin’s official learning centre is a first-party commerce-learning surface. It does not give permission to sell an overseas course, and its homepage does not establish that a particular search-operations module is currently available. If a team observes commerce vocabulary there, record the exact module, wording and date rather than treating the homepage as proof of a feature.

Ask: “If this term is seen in a commercial context, what is it promising?” A title that sounds like a tool discount, a quick certificate, or a growth tactic may attract a different expectation from a workshop that teaches a repeatable professional task. The mismatch can be corrected before translation and production costs increase.

A small record beats a large keyword spreadsheet

For every test, keep six fields:

Exact Chinese query, including punctuation and variant characters.

Source surface and date observed.

What appeared next: course, category, question, product-operation concept, or no useful context.

Your interpretation of the likely intent, labelled as a hypothesis.

What the source cannot establish.

The next evidence needed before changing the course name.

The fifth field is the safeguard. Write it in plain language: “This page shows that the platform has a search or learning category. It does not show demand for this workshop.” That sentence prevents a team from turning an interface into a forecast during a handoff.

The sixth field turns the record into a decision tool. Perhaps the next step is a Chinese reader review of the proposed learning outcome. Perhaps the team needs to compare the title with a real buyer problem, an alternative solution, and the asset that would be delivered. If the audience and paid outcome are still undefined, stop the keyword exercise. More terms will only hide the missing decision.

What a translation-first process misses

Translation-first naming treats a course as a string. Native-query testing treats it as a promise made in a particular context. Those are different objects.

Suppose “agent workflow” is translated into a phrase that sounds technically accurate. On a course surface it may suggest a programming class. In a question surface it may imply a troubleshooting discussion. In a commerce-learning context it may resemble a search-operations topic. The translation has not failed grammatically; it has failed to tell the team which product promise it is making.

This is why the test should happen before a final title, thumbnail, subtitles, or creator brief. It is cheaper to change a working hypothesis than to localize eighteen lessons around an ambiguous promise. It also gives a future Chinese editor a traceable reason for choosing one phrase over another, instead of an unexplained preference.

A counterexample: do not search before you know the work

There is a condition under which even this method is premature. If the team cannot answer who pays, what work the learner should complete, and what could replace the course, it should not start by collecting Chinese queries. The first document should be a buyer–problem–alternative–delivery worksheet. Search language cannot choose a product promise that the product team has not made.

This also means that a low number of visible results is not a rejection. It may mean the candidate is phrased too narrowly, the surface is the wrong one, or the underlying job has not been described clearly. Record the uncertainty and test the next hypothesis; do not manufacture a demand conclusion.

The practical output

At the end of the first pass, the deliverable should be a short query map, not a ranking table. It should show which Chinese phrases are plausible descriptions of the learning result, which belong to a question context, and which carry a commercial or tool-related expectation. Each row should retain its source date and its limits.

The sentence worth carrying into the next meeting is simple: a Chinese search query is evidence about language in a surface, not evidence that the product has a market.

If you are deciding whether an existing expert product has a clear China-facing promise, request a China Product Fit conversation. Bring the English promise, the intended learner, and the query record; do not bring an unsupported traffic forecast.

Related reading

Buyer–Problem–Alternative–Delivery Worksheet

On Zhihu, Start With the Question—not the Content Calendar

How Overseas Experts Can Reach Chinese Buyers Without Building Every Channel

When Topic Popularity Is Not Buyer Demand

Sources and evidence boundary

Douyin E-commerce Official Learning Centre, checked 2026-08-23.
