It often sounds like a request for a trend report. Usually it contains three much more personal questions:

Could somebody there use my method? Would anyone pay for it? How much would I have to change?

The tempting answer is a list: artificial intelligence, leadership, wellbeing, professional education. It sounds informed and tells the expert almost nothing.

Asking what China needs is like asking what New York wants for dinner. The population is impressive. Dinner is still undecided.

China is not one customer

A software architect deciding whether to split a legacy system, an HR director managing teams across three countries, and a consumer buying a personal-development course do not share one budget, one buying process, or one definition of value.

That is why “China is a large market” is background, not evidence. A useful market question has four parts:

Problem: What costly or persistent job is not being done well?

Buyer: Who can approve money or time to solve it?

Alternative: What are they using now—local trainers, software, free content, or an internal team?

Delivery: Can the method work with the buyer’s language, tools, schedule, price, and regulatory setting?

Miss one part and a promising theme can still become the wrong product.

Attention is the first rung, not the top of the ladder

Imagine a five-rung ladder.

At the bottom, people search, watch, like, and discuss a topic. At the top, a named buyer pays, uses the solution, and wants to continue.

The rungs are:

Attention — people notice the topic.

Recognised problem — a target user can describe the difficulty in their own words.

Active search — the buyer compares courses, consultants, tools, or internal options.

Budget and procurement — someone has authority, timing, and resources.

Paid use and result — a real product is bought and produces an observable outcome.

One viral video proves the first rung. It does not prove the fifth. A public corporate-training page with pricing or an enquiry route is stronger evidence, but it still does not prove that your product is the one the buyer will choose.

That distinction prevents an expensive mistake: translating a full course because a keyword looks popular.

Four hypotheses worth investigating—not market findings

The four prompts below are not a market report and do not say that Chinese buyers are currently purchasing any reader’s offer. They are examples of places to form a falsifiable buyer–problem–alternative–delivery hypothesis. Each requires current, route-specific evidence before a product claim is made.

Chinese companies managing overseas teams

For a company that hires across countries, a testable question may concern decisions across time zones, headquarters–local-team tension, or trust without constant supervision. The question is not evidence that a particular buyer is currently budgeting for that work.

An overseas expert may bring useful operating methods here. But a course built entirely around Slack, Google Workspace, or a fully distributed Silicon Valley startup may need substantial redesign.

High-cost software and AI decisions

One possible test question is not merely “Can employees open an AI tool?” but “Which workflow might change, what data may be used, who is accountable, and how would a team judge reliability?”

An engineering offer might test whether buyers value judgment about when not to adopt a fashionable architecture. That still requires evidence; it is not a claim that generic tool tutorials are universally replaceable or that a buyer will pay.

Leadership behaviour that survives the workshop

If an offer concerns communication, psychological safety, or conflict, merely changing examples from John to Xiao Wang is unlikely to test the delivery design. A test can ask whether usable conversation routines, facilitation methods, and follow-through are needed in a named setting. Methods that depend on diagnosing individuals or handling unnecessary sensitive data require additional caution.

Specialist expertise with a narrow but identifiable buyer

A niche expert does not need to begin with a mass audience. The usable hypothesis is a recognizable buyer problem plus a delivery format that can be tested without pretending the whole market has been validated. The more useful next question is not “how large is the audience?” but “what would make this one buyer leave their current alternative?” Use the buyer–problem–alternative–delivery worksheet to make that question concrete.

Two mismatches that look like opportunities

First, a product can be successful overseas and still depend on tax rules, healthcare systems, payment tools, job markets, or platforms that do not travel. Translation makes that mismatch easier to read; it does not repair it.

Second, a real Chinese problem does not automatically validate a particular overseas course. The buyer may want a one-day Chinese workshop with industry examples while the creator offers a four-week English cohort. The problem is real. The product–buyer–delivery match is not.

This is why a strong course can still begin with the wrong first move, and why a useful back catalogue is an input rather than automatic permission to publish or sell it.

If the expertise is narrow, that is not automatically a disadvantage. It can make the first buyer hypothesis easier to falsify. Testing a Second Market for Niche Expertise shows how to keep that test bounded.

The seven-question self-check

Before commissioning a translation, ask:

Can I name a specific buyer rather than “Chinese users”?

Can I describe the moment when this problem becomes costly?

What local alternative does that buyer use today?

Is my evidence attention, active search, budget, or paid use?

Which part of my method is difficult for local alternatives to reproduce?

Can the tools, examples, support, and price work in the buyer’s setting?

Who owns the rights required to assess, adapt, test, and distribute the material?

If the first four answers are vague, the next step is not a full launch. It is a small, honest test of one product, one buyer, and one problem.

China does not need “more overseas content” in the abstract. It may need a particular method that solves a particular problem better than the available alternatives—and can be delivered responsibly.

That is a narrower claim. It is also one that can be tested.

Turn the question into one sentence

The first version of a useful demand hypothesis should be boringly specific:

We believe that [named buyer] encounters [costly situation], currently uses [alternative], and may consider [defined format] if it can deliver [recognizable outcome] under [named delivery condition].

For example, “China needs leadership training” is not a hypothesis. “A China-based operations leader coordinating a new overseas team may test a short working session on cross-time-zone handoffs instead of an English self-paced course” is closer. It is still unproven. But it can now be disproved through interviews, a public concept explanation, or a route-specific conversation.

The counterexample matters: a topic can attract plenty of attention while the named buyer has no budget, already uses a local alternative, or needs a format that this expert cannot responsibly deliver. In that case the appropriate result is a stop or redesign decision, not a longer keyword list.

This is also why a hypothesis needs an expiry date. A public signal or conversation that was useful three months ago may no longer describe the buyer, the alternative, or the route. Recheck the one condition that carries the most risk before putting money into translation, promotion, or course production.

What the public sources can—and cannot—show

One public course page can show that a named provider markets a named training topic; it cannot establish overall demand, pricing acceptance, buyer willingness, platform availability, or a fit for another provider. A public procurement notice can show that a named institution has specified a training service; it cannot be added to social attention and called a general market size. Use either source only to write a testable question, then keep the buyer, alternative, delivery, and permission checks separate.

For that next step, use the market-demand evidence ladder, the buyer–problem–alternative–delivery worksheet, and How to Map Local Alternatives Before Entering China.

Have an existing course, workshop, or professional method? Send OriBridge one public product link and the buyer problem you believe it could solve. Assessment does not authorize translation, publication, or sales.

Knowledge hub: Continue with the Market Demand & Opportunity hub for the wider decision path.

Sources

<a
